The pub looked ancient, as though it had time traveled from the nether world in search of a gem from another world. The rain was heaving, so we ducked inside to find a hearth warm with old world mystery aglow in Gaelic magic. Nailed above the hearth, where boots drip rain and stories begin, was a question, without any clear answers, an enigma, that hadn’t been asked. The light was dim, the people kind, reserved, but warm, and our host? Eager to pour us a dram of some of his finest single malt... And then we saw it, there it was, by Jove! There was the sign, in the back of the room, hidden beneath decades of forgetting, thousands of cigarette nights lit till dawn; telling stories and laughing with the kin folk. The words “Scotch Whiskey” spanning across the sign in warm cream-colored script, catching the kind of light that belongs in a place with few windows and too many secrets. Above it, in slightly smaller script, “Single Malt,” as if the sign itself knows the weight of the phrase and doesn’t need to oversell it. A wave of white, time and space, underlines the Scotch Whiskey, grounding it like only time and patience can temper the spirits; and “Uisce Beatha” grounds the sign with its reminder of water of life.
This isn’t something made. It’s something that has become. Aged quietly in forgotten casks. Born of mist and stone. Sipped slowly, and never twice the same.
